Our Farm

Picture
Peter and I have a small farm located high up on the Niagara Escarpment, a protected biosphere.  We first became interested in alpacas after a  fabulous vacation in Peru.  Shortly thereafter we moved to a 40 acre hobby farm that included an old farmhouse and a century bank barn.  The adventure began!

Our first surprise occurred that spring when one of the alpacas gave birth to a beautiful cria (baby alpaca) that we called Koko ( a knockout twice over).  As the mother was not purchased as pregnant, it was a delightful surprise.

Over our time at the farm we have had many adventures and have been buoyed up by our ability to manage experiences we had not previously known we could handle.  We have also met a whole community of new friends as we joined alpaca associations and our co-operative , AFCO - Alpaca Fibre Cooperative of Ontario.

For me personally,  the whole process from managing the daily needs of the herd through to the gathering of friends at Shearing time and the subsequent processing of fibre has been a lifelong dream.  I have always enjoyed crafts but the extra element of putting a name to each yarn I use and specializing in making the handcrafted yarns after using mass produced yarns has been fulfilling.
