About Alpacas
Alpacas are not native to Canada but have adapted very well to our climate.  With their dense fleece they are able to withstand and thrive in very cold conditions.  Shearing in early spring helps them adjust to the hot summer weather although they need plenty of water to ensure they do not suffer heat exhaustion.

Most people associate alpacas and their cousins llamas with camels and think of them as spitting when annoyed.  Alpacas are by nature are very calm and gentle and will only spit at each other when competing intensely as for example over their daily grain ration which they love.  They are a herd animal and are content as long as they have other alpacas for company.

They are intelligent and always curious but do not tolerate petting in the way that a dog or cat will.  They make a variety of sounds the most common of which is best described as "humming"  hence the name of our farm.
